Description

This amusing and scarce pictorial map, signed ‘Mackay’ in the lower right, was published in 1967 by 20th Century Fox to promote the year’s upcoming film lineup. Based on the content (notably, a large red arrow), the map was issued as a promotional souvenir for a Hollywood open house aimed at theater owners.

The image shows a stylized overview of the United States and Canada, dominated by cinemas and long queues. A number of Fox’s latest releases are named and referenced throughout, including Caprice, A Guide for a Married Man, The Sand Pebbles, Two for the Road, The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, Dr. Doolittle, and Fathom. The Sound of Music, released 2 years earlier and winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture, is also playing.

A variety of figures representing America’s rich diversity and history comment with enthusiasm. Many reference ‘booking’ the films and the possibility for profits (indicating the map’s original purpose). Others comment on Hollywood stars like Audrey Hepburn, Albert Finney, and Doris Day.

Rare – unlisted in OCLC.
