Description
This somewhat discomforting map of Occupied France was published in 1940 by Velhagen & Klasing, a German firm with locations in Leipzig and Bielefeld. The proud Third French Republic had fallen in June, replaced by an occupation regime controlling about 3/5 of the European territory; with a puppet government in Vichy ostensibly governing the rest.
A physical base map shows shaded relief and labels various geographic features -corresponding French abbreviations are offered in the lower margin. Place names are identified with labels in relation to the size of their population. Red overprinting identifies the national boundaries based on the terms of the ceasefire agreement. Naval ports and mining/industrial areas are also highlighted – possibly reflecting future German ambitions about the remaining French lands.
