Description

This group of four geologic atlases was published by the United States Geological Survey between 1894 and 1897. Each focuses on a particular quadrangle within California’s Gold Belt – a portion of the Sierra Nevada lying between the parallels of 37° 30′ and 40° north latitude. The approximately 9,000 square mile area was rich in gold-bearing deposits.

Included are the Library Editions of the Sonora Folio, Smartsville Folio, Sacramento Folio, and Downieville Folio. Each atlas includes a summary of the Gold Belt, topographic and geologic maps, and cross-sections of geologic structures.
