Description
This fortification flow chart was published in London in 1686 as part of Richard Blome’s Gentleman’s Recreation. The publication uses a series of similar diagrams to illustrate branches of knowledge every 17th-century gentleman should have within his grasp; hawking, hunting, navigation, astronomy, grammar, and dozens more including this plate on military engineering and fortifications.
Tools of the trade surround the central chart, with a scene at the bottom of the sheet highlighting the efficacy of proper fortifications against both cavalry and infantry. The sheet was dedicated to Lord Dartmouth, Master of the Ordnance to King James I, according to the text in the upper left.
