Description
This shaded relief map of the island of Formosa (Taiwan) was designed by the Research & Analysis Branch of the Office of Strategic Services and published as a NEWSMAP by the Army Information Branch in August 1945. NEWSMAPS were issued weekly both domestically and overseas to different branches of the U.S. Armed Forces to keep members informed of ongoing events in the global conflict.
The image highlights Taiwan as one of Japan’s fortified bastions, rich with natural resources and covered by rugged terrain. The verso presents information about the results of the Potsdam Conference, as well as news of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima (Nagasaki is omitted). “Man has harnessed the power of the sun and stars in the atomic bomb. It is a weapon which could end all war – or all mankind.”
