Description
The perfect map for a serious baseball fan! This charming pictorial, signed Gade Bassett in the upper left, was published as a promotional mailer for The Sporting News of St. Louis. A date on the stamped address (verso) indicates it was issued in August, 1956, for the next year’s (1957) Spring Training.
Humorous caricatures scattered across Florida and Arizona reflect each of the sixteen Major League teams. The Yankees are looking quite strong, the Braves are holding a stein in honor of their hometown (Milwaukee), and the Dem Bums (a popular nickname for the Dodgers) are tottering near Vero Beach after winning the 1955 World Series.
Of particular interest is the Giants, represented by manager Bill Rigney getting stung by a cactus. The ‘Maglie or Robby’ in the speech bubble refers to two recent ‘prickly’ points for the team: the sale of Sal Maglie to the Indians (who then immediately flipped him to the rival Dodgers) and the rumors of a potential trade for an ‘old’ Jackie Robinson. Famously, rather than being traded to the Giants, Robinson chose to retire in 1957.
