Description
This interesting die-cut map presents a carefully selected group of airline routes in operation across the continental United States. Omitting large carriers, the image shows a complex web of regional operators prior to the massive industry consolidation that occurred later in the 20th century.
The routes of thirteen different companies are shown in varying colors and stops along each are labeled, though no other geographic data is presented. Descriptive summaries of each of the thirteen operators are provided below their respective logos. None of them remain in operation today, though a few (Frontier, Southwest, Piedmont) have subsequent iterations that share the same name.
Outlines of the Douglas DC-3, the workhorse of most fleets, can be seen soaring aloft at the top of the page. Persuasive information on ‘How Local Airlines Serve America’ and a selective history of the industry are provided on the verso.
Statistics provided on cumulative flights from 1955 help to date the map. Published around 1956 and distributed in Washington, D.C. by the Conference of Local Airlines.
