Description

“Winter really is coming. Are you thinking about going away? Consider driving to Florida.” This gentle warning was written by Nathan Mayo, Florida’s Commissioner of Agriculture, as the introduction to this pamphlet published by the department under his authority in 1931. Mayo was just a few years into his career in the role that would ultimately span over five decades, during which the State Department of Agriculture would become one of the most powerful political machines in the state.

The pamphlet was one of the dozens published during his tenure promoting Florida’s economic opportunities, favorable climate, and abundant arable land. Photographs and text throughout describe such conveniences in great detail, sure to appeal to both tourists and potential transplants alike.

The publication also includes a dated fold-out map of the state that was compiled by the Record Company of St. Augustine. A timeline of major events between 1497 and 1924 is provided in the lower left, while numerous annotations throughout the image highlight further historic places, people, and affairs.
