Description
This marvelously detailed blueprint covers several square blocks of Indianapolis, Indiana, west of downtown and adjacent to the White River. Created by the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago, and St. Louis Railway (‘Big Four’) Office of Chief Engineer in 1921, the plan highlights proposed joint trackage (about 2000′ total) with the White River Railroad as the lines approach the bridge south of Washington Street. A legend in the upper center outlines the colors used to denote the transfer of rights.
Issued at a scale of 1″ = 100′, the image provides a wealth of information about a (formerly) heavily industrialized part of the city, noting numerous operational rail lines, a freight house, and local industries. Much of the area north of the tracks is now occupied by Victory Field (home of the Indianapolis Indians) and White River State Park.
