Description

This gorgeous map of Greece features original hand color used to delineate the various political divisions which date back to the Classical era, though at the time of publication nearly the entire area was under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. Toponyms reflect an interesting combination of ancient and contemporary names for towns, religious sites, geographic features, and more. Examples include Venetian castles on Crete, Mt. Olympus, and ancient cities like Troy, Athens, Corinth, and Thebes.

Numerous islands include an accompanying index for particular locations due to limitations of space and topography is shown pictorially. A decorative cartouche in the lower left identifies the two primary contributors to the map – Nicholas Visscher (the original cartographer) and Peter Schenk the Younger.

The latter inherited Visscher’s plates and re-issued this map around 1713. The cartouche also features a figure of Athena and numerous tools reflecting Classical art, science & culture. Presiding over all is an image of a radiant monarch, presumably a homage to King Louis XIV (the Sun King) of France.
