Description

From its boldly illustrated cover to the concluding advertisements, this 1929 Los Angeles Express Yearbook captures the spirit of the Prohibition Era in Los Angeles. The myriad of recreational opportunities and celebrated agricultural productivity contrast somewhat with the growing industrialization of the southern California region, fueled by large oil reserves and expanding port facilities. Notable contents include anticipation for the 1932 Summer Olympics, aerial photographs (aviation was all the rage), an article (with map) on L.A.’s Bunker Hill Project, and a dual spread centerfold highlighting the ‘Achievements of Los Angeles County.’

The year after publication (1930), William Randolph Hearst purchased the Evening Express and combined it with his Los Angeles Evening Herald to create the Los Angeles Evening Herald and Express.
