Description

Evanston, a northern suburb of Chicago, experienced significant industrial growth and urbanization after World War II and diligently worked to foster the image of the ideal suburban destination. This map, published by the Evanston Chamber of Commerce, was designed to highlight the financial, educational, recreational, and cultural opportunities of the city.

It’s interesting that the map of the city is sparsely detailed and takes up only about a third of the sheet. The attention given to connecting highways and surrounding areas, along with a list of ‘Points of Interest Nearby’, underscores the intent of the map to draw outsiders into the city.
