Description
This lovely map of the United States presents an interesting national snapshot near the end of the 19th century. States and territories (including the public lands in Oklahoma) are highlighted in original printed color and individually labeled. A wonderful variety of toponyms in a mix of French and English identify towns, forts, Native American villages, trading posts, and numerous geographic features.
Topography is depicted with finely engraved hachure, emphasizing the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada. A robust network of railroads is shown connecting every state from coast to coast. The lower left contains a view of Washington, D.C. by Soudain.
The map was drawn by A. Bixet and engraved by L. Smith under the direction of J. Migeon. Published in Paris by Charles Lacoste around 1890.
