Description
This attractive copperplate engraved map shows Central Asia and the Arabian Peninsula in some detail in the mid-18th century. Simple topography is depicted pictorially, and various font styles reflect different place names, regions, and kingdoms. Numerous interesting annotations (in French) are also provided; relating to particular geographic features, trade routes, or local tribes.
Five distance scales are included, and the lower left contains a decorative cartouche featuring two figures, one of which is holding an opium pipe. A nearby book likely relates to the long history of Muslim scholarship in the region.
Published in Paris by Robert de Vaugondy in 1753 for inclusion in his Atlas Universel.
