Description

The decorum and romance of the medieval knight has long captured the attention of audiences across the world. The French were particularly fond of their heraldry, which is a broad category encompassing the history and design of coats of arms; as well as the study of pedigrees, mottoes and crests. Although the billowing banners and crested shields of knights on the battlefield have long past, heraldry has been called “the shorthand of history” for its ability to tell a complex story in just one image. Such complexities are on full display on this sheet, taken from a French encylopedia around 1845.

Rules regarding colors, shapes, locations, supplementary images (like casques and crowns), organization and style are all provided in this dense chart. Each component of a coat of arms is selected deliberately according to these time-honored traditions. Vivid examples are provided in bright color, some of which are heightened with gold and silver paint.
