Description

This outdated map of one of the most populous regions in the world today was published in Edinburgh by A. & C. Black in 1853. A delicate image engraved by Sydney Hall outlines topography, geographic features, and settlements between Central China and the Himalayas to the Dutch East Indies.

The somewhat faded color, originally applied by hand at the time of printing, distinguishes political territories, many of which were under the colonial authority of various European powers. An inset in the lower center shows Labuan Island in Malaysia – an important British outpost and naval station.
