Description

Designed to appear in the same style as sixteenth-century maps, this pair of images are based on a wall mural originally designed for the National Geographic Society building by N.C. Wyeth. Decorative elements such as sailing ships, wind heads, and sea monsters were all common on maps produced during the “Golden Age of Cartography” and appear here alongside routes taken by early explorers.

Surrounding each hemisphere are additional mythological and historical figures, such as Poseidon, Zeus, Columbus, and Galileo. Countries are depicted with their modern borders, with various colors representing political organization on each continent.

Overall, an ornate and desirable pair of maps that reflect strongly on the history and development of cartography. Copy written by the National Geographic Society in 1928.
