Description
This trio of woodblock views were originally published in the November 18, 1865 edition of Harper’s Weekly. The month before, a devastating earthquake struck San Francisco and was documented in detail by a number of authors and outlets, including Mark Twain.
Two scenes, based on sketches by C. L. Bugbee, show terrified pedestrians fleeing from falling buildings. A third image presents Richmond’s Virginia State Penitentiary, home to 287 Union prisoners of war at the time of their evacuation.
