Description

Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) emerged in the early 1970s as a tabletop role-playing game created in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. First commercially released in 1974, the game pioneered a unique blend of fantasy storytelling, strategy, and imagination, with players creating characters and navigating adventures in a collaborative setting. The game quickly gained popularity, evolving through various editions and developing a dedicated community. By the early 1990s, Dungeons and Dragons had become a cultural phenomenon, influencing literature, art, and even video games, establishing itself as the cornerstone of the role-playing game genre.

This map covers a portion of the world of Faerun, the geographic setting for the ‘Forgotten Realms’ D&D campaign first released in 1987. It presents a colorful overview of the region known as the Sword Coast. Various physical features (most of which affect gameplay) are depicted pictorially and noted in the legend in the lower left. Places of interest include Neverwinter, Waterdeep, and Baldur’s Gate.

Published in 1993 by TSR, Inc., the original publisher of Dungeons & Dragons. Four years later the franchise would be acquired by Wizards of the Coast.
