Description

This magnificent pocket map reflects the growing popularity of Bermuda as a tourist destination in the early 20th century. British, Americans, and Canadians looking to escape harsh winters would flock via steamship to the island group, where a variety of amenities like luxury hotels and yacht clubs awaited them. It was also a haven for sailors – a large Royal Navy dockyard had been in operation since 1811.

The map presents contemporary details reflecting a variety of uses. Cricket grounds and a race course are shown alongside Forts Hamilton, Victoria, and William. Churches, lighthouses, military hospitals (including a lunatic asylum), and other points of interest are also identified. The road network is of particular interest.

Three types of lines show the best, good, and poor routes; while small arrows signify the accompanying grade. The steepest points are ‘dangerous for wheeling’, according to the accompanying legend in the lower left. An inset map of Hamilton, the capital and seat of government, can be seen in the center. Within, individual buildings are outlined and labeled. Steamship wharves, the U.S. Consulate, hotels, and the newly consecrated Bermuda Cathedral are just a few notable examples.

The map was created by the A.R. Ohman Map Company of New York on behalf of the Royal Gazette Co. Ltd. It’s the fourth edition, revised and updated to 1911.
