Description

This uncommon collection of observations was compiled by C. Addams-Williams, Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department, and published in Calcutta by the Bengal Secretariat Book Depot in 1913.

Each lecture (six in total) touches on a different aspect of the drainage of the massive Ganges Delta concerning local agriculture and industry. Reclaiming tidal lands using various drainage systems for cultivation and construction represents a significant portion of the work.

In addition to numerous small maps and folding diagrams, the volume includes a large folding map of an area south of Calcutta (Kolkata) adjacent to the Hooghly River. It shows huge tracts of former river basin and lowlands that have been drained or are planned for future efforts. A complex system of canals, sluices, and embankments is noted across an area that is among the most densely populated on the planet today.
