Description

This interesting piece of wartime homefront amusement was published around 1942 by Thompson Products, Inc. of Cleveland. A double-sided puzzle of approximately 150 pieces was designed for use as a visual aid in identifying Allied planes, as well as a geographic reference with a brightly colored political map on the verso.

One side of the puzzle displays an illustration designed by noted commercial aviation artist Charles Herman Hubbell that depicts a formation of B-18 bombers flying on a night mission. The heavy bomber quickly became obsolete in the early 1940s, though it was the first AAF plane to successfully destroy a German U-Boat. The opposite side presents a detailed map of much of the Western Hemisphere and South Pacific Ocean.
