Description
Though today it’s one of the most popular tourist destinations on the planet, Disneyland in Anaheim, California got an inauspicious start over sixty-five years ago. After visiting amusement parks with his daughter, Walt Disney had an idea for an attraction to entertain visiting fans. He soon realized that the proposed site adjacent to his movie studios in Burbank was too small, and instead bought 160 acres of land near Anaheim in 1953. Just two years later, Disneyland opened to international press and acclaim, and it’s been largely uphill for the Disney Corporation since!
This wonderful bird’s eye view of the park was published by Walt Disney Productions less than a decade later, and it shows the massive growth experienced in the intervening years. Dozens of attractions are individually illustrated and labeled, and locations accessible via the monorail (opened in 1959) are indicated with a star.
The border of the map is comprised of portraits from an expanding universe of characters, most recently from Sleeping Beauty (1959) and the upcoming Sword and the Stone (1963).
