Description
This uncommon map of Southeast Asia was published in the early 18th century and covers portions of modern-day Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and China. It shows the Western geographic understanding of a large region that represented vast quantities of luxury goods in high demand among European markets.
Locations like Batavia, Mataeran, Cantam (Canton), Malacca, Pegu, and Manila were cornerstones in a trade network for silks, spices, ivory, and other exotic items. Warfare amongst the Dutch, Portuguese, English, Chinese, and indigenous populations was commonplace, with the decorative title cartouche reflecting the contemporary geopolitical situation nicely.
Published in Leyden by Pieter Van der Aa around 1705.
