Description

The Palatinate is a historic region in southwestern Germany that dates back to the Holy Roman Empire. It is a popular tourist destination and is known for its impressive architecture, ancient forests, and numerous battlefields. This colorful road map was aimed at promoting interwar automobile tourism across the region. The image focuses on the town of Kaiserslautern and includes nearby Worms, Landau, and Kreuznach. Pictorial vignettes highlight local historic sites, cultural elements, and coats of arms, while accompanying text on the front covers provides a brief summary of the Palatinate.

The map was designed by Prof. Werner Peiner, with text written by Kasimir Edschmid. Published by Shell Oil in the mid to late 1920s. This particular example was likely a souvenir from an American soldier during World War II, as it’s signed by an Army censor, Brig. General Al Stack, on the front cover.
