Description
This interesting antique map presents a late 18th-century overview of a historic region, Yedisan, in modern-day Ukraine that was situated between the Southern Bug (Bog) and Dniester Rivers. The area was first occupied by the Crimean Khanate for slave-raiding excursions along the Black Sea coast, but portions would be contested and captured by the Ottoman Empire, Poland-Lithuania, Russia, and Cossack bands. Of particular interest is Grigory Potemkin’s famous 1788 Siege of Otschakow (Ochakov), marked with sabres next to the fortified city. In 1792, the Treaty of Jassy concluded the Russo-Turkish War and the Russian conquest of Yedisan was complete.
