Description

This somewhat chilling topographic map shows the vast territorial claims of Germany shortly after the outbreak of the Second World War. It reflects the successful invasion of Poland by Nazi and Soviet forces and the subsequent distribution of its land amid the plunderers. The borders of the Third Reich extend into the General Gouvernement occupational area around Warsaw as well as the Unter deutscher Zivilvenwaltung surrounding Bialystok. The Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia highlights the takeover of the Czech rump state after the ‘peaceful’ annexation of the Sudetenland in 1938.

Deposits of natural resources like coal, iron, oil, and copper are noted throughout the image. Railways and the paved highways of the Reichsautobahn (completed and in progress) are also identified according to the legend in the lower right.

The map was edited by Dr. W. Eggers of the cartographic firm of Harms. Published in Leipzig in 1939 by List & von Bressendorf.
