Description

V-E Day represents the Allied forces acceptance of Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender, effectively ending the conflict in Europe. However, because of a time difference in Moscow and Berlin, the date is celebrated on different days in the United States and the Soviet Union. This distinction is known to occasionally cause confusion, and May 9th was originally printed on the 26th edition of the Dated Events War Map, Series printed by Shaw Barton.

A stamp corrected the issue before distribution by the Chicago Steel Service Company. Otherwise, the map is typical of the Dated Event War Map Series and lists numerous important battles and affairs both within the map and in tables on either side. This particular example was clearly issued very soon after V-E Day, and includes an inset map showing possible zones of occupation. Further inset maps showing the home islands of Japan and the ongoing action in the Philippines.
