After the capitulation of France and Scandinavia, Germany was quick to develop strong defensive emplacements across the coasts, leading to the nickname “Fortress Europe.” While Allied forces continued to make their way up the Italian peninsula in June of 1944, the largest amphibious invasion in the world took place along the coasts of northern France to batter down the walls of Hitler’s continental fortress.
This edition (the 18th) of the Dated Events War Map was issued to commemorate those landings, and includes an inset map showing the location of debarkation ports on the English Channel. Like other versions, the image makes extensive use of color, text and illustrations to convey a tremendous amount of information related to the ongoing conflict. This particular example was printed in Baltimore by Gettier-Montanye, Inc. and distributed by a petroleum company from Iowa.
