First copyrighted by C.C. Petersen in 1942, the Dated Events War Map series went through over 30 different iterations by numerous printing houses in Canada and the United States. This is one of the last examples, Edition 28, issued in the months after atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, forcing Japan’s unconditional surrender. It is a celebration of the Allied victory, with emphasis on the American contributions.
Several photographs are included on the map, including portraits of Supreme Allied Commanders Dwight Eisenhower and Douglas MacArthur. On the right side of the sheet is the famous image of the flag raising at Iwo Jima and an ominous pair of photos linked through implied cause and effect – Pearl Harbor and the atomic bomb. An inset map of Japan notes the targeted cities and subsequent surrender aboard the U.S.S. Missouri.
In addition to numerous text boxes within the map citing important battles, territorial changes and leadership conferences, a list of dated events from each theater is provided on either side. The Roll Call of the United Nations at the top of the sheet lists the 48 countries that were either invaded by or declared war upon the Axis powers (excluding Italy). Bright color on the map also emphasizes the international composition of the Allied efforts.
