Description

For several years in the 1930’s, the United States military leased the use of several islands near Puerto Rico for testing various offensive and defensive weaponry. These included mortar shells, concrete bunkers, air to ground missiles and even chemical weapons.

This chart of Culebra and nearby Culebrita were created in 1936 to evaluate the effectiveness of artillery fire directed at the island during training exercises the year prior. The image shows extensive topographic detail, including specific elevations at numerous points on the island. Artillery markers, depth soundings, and major geographic features are also identified.

The use of Culebra as a target for naval operations would cease in 1975, after years of protest by local inhabitants.
