Description
This well-used sign shows the operational routes of the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) elevated lines, known belovedly by residents as the ‘L’. It was likely issued in late 1992, after the closure of several stations (California/Lake, Harvard, Wentworth, and Grand/Milwaukee), but before the CTA officially adopted its iconic color-based name system in 1993.
The sticker noting Green Line renovations indicates the sign was used until at least 1994, when the line began extensive rehabilitation and consolidation. An excellent piece of Chicago history that highlights one of the busiest and best transit systems in the country.
