Description
“The Chart which forms the basis of this volume is an attempt to make visible the outlines of the four centuries of American History, in a manner that the exact proportions of time embraced in its successive periods may be seen at a glance.” – Preface.
This fascinating educational volume was compiled by George E. Croscup and published by in New York by the Windsor Publishing Company. Originally issued in the 1910, this third edition was printed in October 1911, reflecting a presumed success on the market.
The contents offer an approachable combination of chronological text (authored by Ernest D. Lewis of New York’s High School of Commerce) and various visual elements. Of particular interest are a series of maps showing the territorial evolution of the U.S., a flowchart of political parties, bar charts highlighting America’s industrial growth, and a large fold-out titled A Synchronic Chart Illustrating the Course of United States History. This chronology, printed by the Williams Engraving Company, presents a colorful political history of America, starting with the colonial period and continuing through the early 20th century and the presidency of William Howard Taft.
