Description

This vibrantly colored steel-engraved map of Kansas, Nebraska, Minnesota, and the Dakota Territory was published in Chicago by Warner & Beers in 1875 as part of H.H. Lloyd & Co’s Atlas of the United States. It provides a detailed overview of the large Great Plains region in the midst of a period of tremendous growth, fueled in large part by the rapidly developing network of railroads and large numbers of European immigrants. A handful of town and county names reflect these overseas origins.

Attractive color, applied by hand shortly after printing, highlights state borders and county configurations. Topography is depicted in hachure, reflecting a mostly flat territory with the notable exception of the Black Hills. The year following publication, conflict over control of the region would erupt into the Great Sioux War of 1876.
