This skillfully engraved map of northwestern Illinois covers the counties of Will, Kendall, Kane, DuPage, and Cook. The region’s robust network of railroads is emphasized, with completed and project routes noted according to the legend in the lower left.
Chicago’s urban density dominates the size of other settlements and various suburban villages (concentrated along rail lines) are shown. Several examples such as Hyde Park, Ravenswood, Irving Park, and Austin, would later be annexed by the city. Riverside, arguably one of the earliest planned communities in the United States, can be seen in Proviso township and would be incorporated as a village the year following.
The map was published in Chicago’s Lakeside Building by the firm of Warner & Beers in 1874.
