Description
It’s estimated that nearly 3 million spectators lined the streets of London to watch (soon-to-be) Queen Elizabeth II proceed through the city on her way to and from Westminster Abbey. One can image the logistics headaches associated with such crowds, and it was critical that traffic was managed properly to ensure a smooth procession.
This map, published shortly before Coronation Day on June 2nd, 1953, shows in explicit detail the parking arrangements, driving restrictions, and other pertinent information for the swarms of bystanders descending upon London (many by car). The Processional Route is noted in bold, and entrances for official spectator cars (provided they have the requisite signage) are labeled by color.
