Description

This unusual compilation of property ownership atlases was likely assembled for use in a Chicago-area real estate firm shortly before World War II. Twelve different volumes (11 by Stacy Map Publishers, 1 by the Globe Map & Atlas Publishers), dated between 1936 and 1939, show major landowners, transportation routes, geographic features, schools, churches, and cemeteries across a wide area around Chicagoland in northern Illinois. The contents are as follows:

  • North Shore/Northern Cook County (undated) and lacking the front cover/first two pages
  • Stacy’s Farm Ownership Atlas of Northern Cook County (dated 1936, complete 10 pages)
  • Stacy’s Farm Plat Book of Lake County, Ill (dated 1939, complete 16 pages)
  • Stacy’s Farm Plat Book of McHenry County, Ill (dated 1939, complete 16 pages)
  • Stacy’s Farm Ownership Plat Book of Kane County, Ill (dated 1939, complete 15 pages)
  • Stacy’s DuPage County, ILL (dated 1937, complete 9 pages)
  • Stacy’s Farm Plat Book of Boone County, Ill (dated 1937, complete 9 pages)
  • Farm Ownership Plat Book of DeKalb County, Illinois (dated 1936 and distributed by the DeKalb Daily Chronicle, complete 18 pages)
  • Stacy’s Farm Plat Book of Ogle County, Ill (undated, complete 22 pages with a county history)
  • Stacy’s Farm Plat Book of Kendall County, Ill (undated, complete 9 pages)

Stacy Map Publishers, advertised as ‘Makers of Farm & City Maps Everywhere’, was a prolific publisher of Midwestern plat maps and urban plans during the 1930s and 1940s. Various editions are included in institutional collections in WorldCat, though the works are uncommon on the market due to their limited distribution. An interesting archive, rich with genealogical information from the Great Depression.

Condition: A-

Condition Description: An unusual collection of twelve plat atlases published together as a single sammelband, sectioned with hardboard tabs. With the exception of the first atlas (North Shore, missing covers and two pages), the contents appear complete and purpose-created for use in a real estate office (tabs, titled in pencil, between each booklet). Manuscript annotations in pencil visible in several areas. Scattered spots of soiling and wear, creased corners, and trimmed edges to neatly fit into the binding (no loss of image). The DuPage County atlas is lightly affected by dampstaining in the upper right. With exception to the unfortunate loss at the beginning, overall in good to very good condition.
