Woodcut title page from the 1574 edition of Petrus Apianus influential book, Cosmographia. This wide ranging publication provided a wealth of data and corresponding illustrations on geographic coordinates, climate, surveying, mathematics, and astronomy.
This title page, in Latin, shows a terrestrial globe with the continents of Africa, Asia and parts of Europe facing outward. Lying at the decorative clawed feet are a number of mathematical tools used for surveying and map-making. Hand color, with Latin text on verso.
