Description

This beautiful woodcut view shows a crowd of attendees dining at the Austrian Village attraction in the Columbian Exposition’s Midway Plaisance. Distinctly separate from the iconic White City, the Midway (the origins of the name) was home to numerous such ‘ethnic’ displays, designed to celebrate the progress by becoming gradually more ‘Westernized’ as one traveled towards Jackson Park.

The Austrian Village attempted to recreate a portion of Vienna from the 17th century, including a replica city hall, period-appropriate music, and the armed pikemen seen on the right.

Based on an illustration by Thure de Thulstrup and originally published in New York as the title page for the August 26, 1893 edition of Harper’s Weekly. For more information on Austrian Village, see this descriptive pamphlet at the Art Institute of Chicago.
