Liberty defending the Constitution!
1 in stock
Description
This eye-catching woodcut cartoon was originally published in the June 8, 1861 edition of Harper’s Weekly – less than 2 months after the bombardment of Ft. Sumter began the American Civil War.
It shows the spirit of George Washington hovering over an allegorical depiction of America – Lady Liberty – as she defends the Constitution against the depredations of caricatures of southern planters. They wear palmetto trees on their hats, a symbol of South Carolina – the first state to secede.
