Description
This beautiful group of maps was illustrated by the talented Ruth Taylor White and originally published in 1941 by the Hawaii Tourist Bureau. Though tourism across the islands would skyrocket in the postwar years, the arrival of air service to the island in 1936 inaugurated a new era of leisure travel to the remote Pacific archipelago. Based on text on one of the panels, this example was reprinted in 1945 by the Advertising Publisher Co., Ltd., presumably near the end of the war that brought thousands to the tropical archipelago.
“To the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and their sister services; to the nurses, war-workers, and all for whom Hawaii is a temporary abode, we offer these capering cartographs with smiles and leis of aloha.”
Five gorgeous pictorial maps are presented as part of the ‘Aloha Greeting Folder’ – one for the entire territory and the islands of Maui, Oahu, Hawaii, and Kauai. Roads and trails are shown on each, with charming vignettes highlighting local culture, natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and more. Pineapples, scantily-clad natives, exotic jungles, and towering volcanoes capture the popular allure of Hawaii that persists into the 21st century.
