Description

“The paradise of the East Coast between Palm Beach and Miami on the Dixie Highway and the East Coast R.R.” – Text, front cover.

This uncommon promotional map was issued in the mid-1920s by the Broward County Commissioners to encourage investment and settlement in the coastal Florida county, which had been established only a decade earlier. The area was in the midst of a huge real estate boom, and the towns of Hollywood, Deerfield, and Davie were incorporated the same year the pamphlet was published. Fort Lauderdale, a more established community, is identified as ‘The City of Opportunity for YOU’, while numerous agricultural and recreational resources are labeled throughout.

The Dixie Highway, Florida East Coast Railroad, and steamship passenger lines offer a variety of transportation options for those looking to check out Broward County for themselves! A simple map of the Florida peninsula can be found on the verso, highlighting the primary highways across the state. Economic statistics showing growth from 1918 to 1923 and portraits of the Board of Commissioners are also presented.

The booklet was compiled by the Advertising Committee of the Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, probably in late 1924 or 1925. Printed in St. Augustine by The Record Company. Scarce, with only one example noted in OCLC at the University of Florida. The map also appears to have been reprinted as part of a 4 page promotional brochure.
