Description
“The climate, which has attracted tourists, health-seekers, and immigrants from the Eastern States and Europe, is undoubtedly the best in the world…California information for home-seekers, opportunity for all to secure a home in the land favored above all others, where raisins, figs, oranges and all other fruits grow; where sunshine and flowers are enjoyed the year round.” [Text on verso]
The first edition of the Southern Pacific Railroad Company’s Climatic Map of California was issued in 1887; this example was lithographed by H.S. Crocker & Company in San Francisco in 1892. The expanding network of the Southern Pacific’s railway network is shown in some detail, with completed and projected lines noted.
Vibrant colors highlight the mean annual temperature in wide bands across the state. The temperate climate would have been particularly attractive to prospective emigrants and potential customers along the lines of the Southern Pacific.
