Description
A posthumous congratulations to First Lieutenant John A. B. Apperson, who was promoted as of April 1st, 1863. His regiment, the 117th Illinois Infantry, would see action on the Red River campaign, the Battle of Nashville, the assault on Mobile, and several other important engagements throughout the Civil War.
Illinois provided more than 250,000 soldiers to the Union cause – only New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio exceeded the Prairie State in enlistments. The printed form is filled out in manuscript and highlighted in several areas with red ink.
Signatures of Richard Yates (Illinois Governor), Ozias Hatch (Secretary of State) and Allen Fuller (Adjutant General) can be seen at the bottom of the sheet. Also of note is the blank number which references the number of years since the United States gained her independence – 87, in this case.
