Description
This map of the city of Reading, Pennsylvania was first published, apparently anonymously, in 1940. It shows a simple street grid bordered within clearly delineated city limits and labels the municipal cemetery, schools, parks and reservoirs (a pencil note also identifies Route 83).
This particular copy of the map was customized by the Central Engineering Department of the Pennsylvania Railroad. It’s been dissected and mounted on linen for preservation and storage convenience. Manuscript updates in red and green highlight track ownership between the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Reading Railroad; both are labeled in the legend added near the bottom of the image. Additional notations identify the location of the local freight and passenger stations.
