Description

This incredible view of the city of Pittsburgh was created by William Gillespie Armor and published locally in 1888 by The Armor Lithograph Company, Limited. It presents a sweeping panorama of the industrial city at the junction of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers in the late 19th century.

Numerous smokestacks dot the skyline, reflecting areas of robust manufacturing (primarily along the waterfront). Transportation is also key, with numerous railroad lines, stations, bridges, and riverboats shown moving goods and people throughout the image. H.H. Richardson’s Allegheny County Courthouse, completed the same year as the view’s publication, dominates the downtown district and can still be seen today.
