Description

Oil City, Pennsylvania was founded in 1860, a year after the first oil well in America was drilled at Titusville, about 16 miles up Oil Creek. It quickly become the center of the burgeoning petroleum industry in the United States, and would become (temporary) home to the headquarters of both Pennzoil and Quaker State oil companies.

The base map of the city shows a simple labeled street grid and over forty numbered buildings identified in an accompanying index in the upper right. A complex overview of the various designations of streets is provided in the lower right.

This particular example was published and customized by the Central Engineering Department at the Pennsylvania Railroad. It has been dissected and mounted on linen for preservation and storage convenience. Manuscript updates use bright colors to highlight railroad track ownership throughout the city and a custom legend identifies the three primary local operators; the Penn Railroad, New York Central Railroad, and Erie Railroad.
