Description

This magnificent little treasure was distributed by the dry goods firm of Robbins, Royce & Hard of New York City, likely in either 1859 or 1860, based on the calendar on the front endpapers. It’s primary use is as a ledger, and the booklet contains nearly 100 pages filled with contemporary manuscript lists noting the purchase of various goods from textiles to spices. An emphasis on the former leads me to believe a previous owner may have been a tailor or otherwise in the clothing business. Dishware, tools, candy, and much more are also included.

The book also contains twelve pages dedicating to introducing the reader to New York City, and presents a list of hotels, telegraph stations, hackney cab fares, and other helpful information. An accompanying fold-out map shows the island of Manhattan south of Twenty-Seventh Street. Streets are labeled and piers along both the East and Hudson Rivers are individually numbered.
