Description

This large scale map of Erie, Pennsylvania was first published by the city’s engineering department in 1940. It shows a detailed snapshot of the city’s infrastructure and provides a comprehensive street index at the bottom of the sheet. Wards, streets, and industries of particular importance are individually labeled.

This particular example has been customized for use within the Central Engineering Department of the Pennsylvania Railroad. The map has been dissected and mounted to linen for preservation and convenience of storage. Hand-applied color lines highlight the various active tracks in operation within the city, and a custom legend affixed to the lower right identifies the five primary railroad operators captured within the image.

Additional manuscript notes identify specific locations of relevance to the rail line; including freight stations, yards, docks, depots and more.
