Description

Issued in French and English, this map sought to draw in European tourists at a time of explosive growth in Athens. The First World War and ongoing conflicts with Turkey brought millions of refugees to the country, and the economy in Greece struggled to cope.

This map, sponsored by American Express, is a clear effort to promote Athens as a destination rich in architecture, history, and culture. Little detail is given to the reader with the exception of small profile illustrations of prominent buildings and street names. A compass in the upper right indicates the map is oriented with west at the top, while an index on the verso (also in French and English) notes the numbered locations and provides a few tips on Greek pronunciations.
